31.10 The Polytech Orchestra’s autumn concerts

In the Autumn Concerts we celebrate forgotten masterpieces and the composers behind them. Aarre Merikanto was a modern visionary, ahead of his time as a composer. His Intrada sparkles with the exotic expression of the early 20th century, as if baroque dances had been draped in an opium-lit cloak. The Parisian organ virtuoso Alexandre Guilmant, for his part, remained as a composer in the shadow of his students Nadia Boulanger and César Franck, even though his symphony already offers a foretaste of Impressionism, embraced by a romantic pastoral world. The Finnish-Swedish composer Ida Moberg was highly educated—among other places in St. Petersburg and Dresden—yet her output was initially erased from the history books. Now her masterpieces are beginning to receive the recognition they deserve, not only in Finland but internationally as well. The child prodigy Florence Price gave her first piano recital at the age of four. The first work in her oeuvre of more than 300 compositions was published when she was eleven. Known also as an organist, Price wrote symphonies that overflow with sonic richness—rhythms and harmonies evocative of Debussy, Wagner, and African-American dance culture—alongside a distinctive, instantly recognizable musical voice. To our knowledge, Price’s Third Symphony is now being heard in Finland for the very first time!

Autumn Concert Fri 31.10.2025 6pm

Espoonlahti Church, Espoo

Program
Aarre Merikanto: Intrada
Alexandre Guilmant: Symphony No. 1, organ soloist Leo Lahonen
Ida Moberg: Parts from the symphonic poem Sunrise
Florence Price: Sympony No. 3

An inspection of the study environment on Aalto university’s campuses, take the survey and make an impact!

All students are invited to answer the anonymous well-being survey from October 27 2025 to November 10 2025. The survey is part of the inspection of the study environment and is coordinated by FSHS.

A statutory inspection of the health, safety and well-being of the study environment is carried out in higher education institutions every three years. This year, there will be a single inspection for the whole Aalto University. The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) has the coordination responsibility. The inspections are carried out in cooperation with the students, the university staff and the municipality’s health inspector.

The inspection includes a well-being survey sent to all students. The answers to the survey give important information on how the students are doing in the student communities. The students answer the survey anonymously and then automatically receive feedback and instructions based on their answers. The answers are used to create a report for FSHS healthcare professionals, University and student representatives. The report will be utilized both locally and nationally. This study environment inspection focuses on issues such as do students have time to eat between lectures, does the university environment support the possibility of physical activity and do the students experience inappropriate treatment within the student communities. Issues that need development may be related to themes such as a safe studying environment or a framework for organizing studies.

FSHS invites all students to answer the well-being questionnaire as part of the inspection from October 27 2025 to November 10 2025, when the link is open for

Espoo unit at https://yths.msurvey.fi/#survey?id=167647

Mikkeli unit at https://yths.msurvey.fi/#survey?id=825199

Students will receive a link to the survey also by e-mail from university and in AYY’s newsletter by e-mail.

It will take about 5-10 minutes to complete the survey. Every answer is important, participate and make an impact!
