Greetings from TEK

Hey everyone!

For many international students, finding a field relevant job is the major challenge in living and thriving in Finland, and in staying here after graduation. At the moment many of you are either applying, or have already applied, for a summer job, which is a super vital step in this, and one that we in TEK we can help with!

TEK is the union for academic engineers and architects in Finland, meaning we connect together students and graduates in a community of over 77,000 people. In Finland it is very common to be a part of a union, and they play a key role in representing your rights and making agreements with employers.

We have a range of resources and services to help in both applying to a job in Finland, and in ensuring you aren’t taken legal advantage once you get an offer. This includes for example CV, cover letter and job interview tips and clinics to ensure you have the highest possible chance of getting a job here, as well as lawyers who can read through your contract before you sign it to make sure it is fair to you. We also provide salary recommendations to help ensure you are paid what you are worth.

As well as these are a range of other benefits, such as help for aspiring entrepreneurs, work life mental health support and a range of webinars and courses, and we also play an active role in funding student life and culture!

Most importantly, membership as a student is completely free! You can sign up at https://www.tek.fi/en/membership/join-tek

This year for the first time TEK has a Student Liaison specifically for international students (me!), so hopefully this won’t be the last time you hear the name TEK! If you have questions about joining that can’t be answered on our website, then feel free to message me (@KvTykki). As an international student myself I know all about the difficulties that can come up when job seeking here, so there won’t be any judgement from me about any kind of question 🙂
