Newsletter 1/2022

A new year has begun not incredibly long ago, and with it begins a new era of Data Guild newsletters. The guild news from now on aim to appear regularly on Friday every one to two weeks, and include guild events, AYY/Aalto events, and other relevant news. If there’s something you’d like to have included in the newsletter, contact the publicist (me) at @datadaddy on Telegram or via email at hanne@dataguild.fi.

Without further ado, here are the news!

Call to join committees

IE Committee – @ray_atreya @Normsie

Hey, it’s your newly elected DG Isäntä and Emäntä (IE). We’re here to bring you a great year with awesome sitsits, excursions, prexam parties, and whatever else you want! Our biggest mission is to keep our DG member well-fed, hydrated, and happy- but we cannot do that all by ourselves. We need YOUR help! If organizing events, cooking, and cruising to Estonia for drinks sounds fun, don’t hesitate and join the IE committee. It will certainly be a wild and fun ride with us, so hop on and let’s make this year GRAPE! Shoot us a message at either @ray_atreya or @Normsie to sign up for a seat on the train of fun. Choo choo!! 🚂

Culture Committee – @thefloppa

Have you ever felt like there’s not enough events going on? Culture committee exists to make even more epic, one-of-a-kind parties. Also, we are developing our own bot that helps us make parties: @DataGuildEventBot. If you have some cool ideas for events you’d like to make – feel free to join our committee!

Introduction to Scientific Computing and HPC 2-4 February 2022

Are you interested in learning how to improve your computing skills and the performance of your data analysis code/tools using High Performance Computing? Please join us for our “Introduction to Scientific Computing and HPC 2-4 February 2022”.

For those who are not familiar with the basics of scientific computing, we offer a quick introduction to the topic on 2/Feb/2022. This is a very broad introduction to the tools available (at Aalto and other places) and when to use them, not just for people who need large computing clusters. Every new computational scientist should attend this once.

For those already familiar with data science, but who feel that they are limited by the hardware/software resources of their laptop/workstation, Part 2 will give you an introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC). While the teaching materials are based on Aalto Triton cluster, the course is suitable for everyone with access to a HPC cluster using slurm.

Part 1: 02/Feb/2022 12:00–16:00 Getting started with scientific computing.
